Research and Production Should Not Be Two Different Codebases

In most quantitative shops the research environment and the production environment are different things built by different people. A researcher works in Python against a historical dataset; an engineer reimplements the accepted strategy in C++ against a live feed. Both do their jobs well, and the two systems nonetheless disagree in small ways that are extremely hard to find afterwards.

The disagreements are rarely dramatic. A timestamp convention differs by a tick. The research dataset was adjusted for corporate actions in a way the live feed is not. A fill assumption in the backtest was optimistic about queue position. Individually each is defensible; together they are the gap between the Sharpe that justified the allocation and the one the book is producing, and attribution cannot separate them from ordinary variance.

Qorvex is built around the position that the model you research against should be the model that trades. The same data layer serves both, point-in-time by construction, with survivorship and look-ahead handled where the data is served rather than left to the researcher to remember. Signals are versioned and carry their own lineage, so when behaviour changes you can see what changed, when, and what it did to the result.

That principle extends into execution. Pre-trade risk — position, exposure, fat-finger limits — is enforced in the order path rather than reported on afterwards, and TCA measures slippage and fill quality against the backtest that justified the trade in the first place. The point is not that these are novel components; it is that they reference one definition of the strategy instead of two.

The test is simple to state. If a strategy behaves differently in production than in research, you should be able to say why within a day. Teams running two codebases usually cannot.
