Distribution Centre Shortens the Walk Behind Every Pick
Slotting had been set when the building opened and never revisited, so the fastest movers sat at the back.
Storage and handling were invoiced from a monthly spreadsheet, and the value-added work was mostly forgotten.
The operator ran nine clients from three sites, each on a different rate card covering storage, inbound handling, picking, kitting and returns. Invoices were assembled by hand from warehouse reports, took eleven days to raise and were regularly disputed. Ad-hoc value-added work was performed, recorded on paper and never billed at all.
Every billable activity is captured as it happens in the warehouse system and rated against the client’s own contract. The invoice is generated from those transactions, with the supporting detail available to the client behind the line. Unbilled activity is reported as an exception rather than absorbed.
Billing runs in a day instead of a fortnight, disputes fell sharply because the detail behind each line is available, and value-added work that had been absorbed is now invoiced.
