Rolling Mill Sees Cost Per Tonne While the Campaign Is Still Running
Energy, yield and alloy cost were known accurately — a month after the steel had been priced and sold.
Certificates were retyped from laboratory results into a template, which is exactly where the errors came from.
Chemical and mechanical results were recorded in the laboratory system, then keyed by hand into the certificate a customer received. Transcription errors were rare but expensive: a wrong figure on a certificate meant a rejected consignment and an argument about the heat it came from. Reissuing a corrected certificate took days.
Test results are captured against the heat in the quality record, and the certificate is generated from that record with the heat number, chemistry, mechanical properties and inspection reference carried through automatically. A certificate cannot be issued where a required test is missing or out of specification without an explicit release decision, recorded against the person who made it.
Certificates are produced at despatch rather than after it, transcription errors have stopped, and any despatched tonne can be traced back to the heat and the tests that released it.
